BACKGROUND
There are many environmental and operational concerns relating to the
proper management of animal wastes. The increasing numbers of animals
maintained worldwide in farming operations with limited land area has made
the proper handling and disposal of animal waste even more important. Good
waste management is essential to keeping animal herds healthy. Run-off
from farming operations must be minimized to prevent non-point pollution
of surface waters. Odors must be controlled to avoid conflicts with
neighboring properties and to contribute to the well being of the animals.
Ideally, some portion of the nutrient value of manure should be preserved
and used to increase productivity of soil.
Special manure holding and pumping systems have evolved to meet the
environmental and operational demands on farms. In many of these systems
special purpose microbial cultures are introduced to actively digest the
organic waste, hold down labor costs and help reduce the hazards of toxic
pit gas. Special purpose microbes also work to reduce the build-up of
solids in a manure holding system and increase the system's effective
storage capacity. If select enzyme producing microbial strains are used,
microbial digestion will reduce the generation of odors and dangerous pit
gas. Proper microbial digestion converts organic solids to a free-flowing
liquid with excellent fertilizer value that can be pumped out, hauled and
easily spread on land.
Manure handling systems vary widely in design and construction, but any
system will benefit from the use of a special purpose microbial digestant.
When treating a system with microbes, it is important to add the digestant
regularly to ensure that the special purpose, odor reducing microbes
maintain dominance in the system.
DESCRIPTION
BACTI-BIO 9500M is a high potency bioculture formulated for farm animal
manure pits, lagoons, slurry stores, feedlots and pens. By utilizing the
powerful waste digesting properties of natural microbes, animal waste
systems will be maintained in a free-flowing condition while odors are
reduced. BACTI-BIO 9500M contains select enzyme producing microbial
strains with the ability to digest and liquify organic waste. The strains
are selectively cultured to digest proteins, fats, oils, starch,
carbohydrates, and cellulose.
BENEFITS
Reduces build-up of solids and formation of dangerous gases.
Reduces odors.
Makes pumping faster and easier. Increases pit capacity.
Maintains nutrient value as fertilizer.
MANURE PITS
Pits should normally be pumped 2 times per year, in the spring and fall.
If possible, make an initial treatment immediately after the pit is pumped
out. For initial treatment in pits that contain solids, double the
treatment amount for the first 8 weeks.
When beginning a treatment program treat each individual pit every week.
After the digestion process is underway, treatments may be reduced to
twice per month. Treatments should be heavier or more frequent if feed,
hay, bedding materials, or detergents, disinfectants, and water hardness
are entering the pit. The pH level of the liquid may have to be adjusted
from time to time to help maintain the best growing conditions for
microbes.
Because microbial activity decreases during freezing winter periods,
heavier applications may be necessary in winter to ensure adequate
digestion.
WHAT HAPPENS IN A PIT TREATED WITH BACTI-BIO 9500M?
Within a few days after initial treatment, foam and/or solids will appear
to float to the top of the pit. Crust on the top of the pit will begin to
wet and eventually sink. Significant reductions in odor will be noticed
after one or two weeks, as the microbes digest solids at the bottom and in
the slurry.
During this period, pockets of hazardous gas (methane and hydrogen
sulfide) will be broken open and dispersed safely. Fertilizer value of the
manure will be preserved by avoiding the loss of nitrogen through the
production of noxious odors. As the process of digestion continues,
production of this gas will be minimized. Also, gas pockets will no longer
accumulate in the liquified waste. Instead, any gas will be released
evenly and safely.
Solids that have been accumulating for months or years will take some
time to digest. A regular treatment schedule will get the system operating
properly, and the solids will be reduced over time. The living microbes
will function continuously to keep the solids accumulations and odors to a
minimum.
FEED LOTS
Apply special purpose microbes to feed lots to minimize odors and liquify
solid wastes. Remove manure from the feed lot, make a slurry with BACTI-BIO
9500M and warm water, then sprinkle the feed lot with the slurry.
LAGOONS
Apply special purpose microbes to lagoons to minimize odor, liquify solid
wastes, and lower B.O.D. and C.O.D. Increase the treatment amount for
lagoons with heavy build-up of solids.
